Tsumago

Our last destination in Japan was also in the Kiso Valley.  Tsumago which is a beautifully preserved post town on the Nakasendo route between Kyoto and Edo.

No cars are allowed on the main street and phone and power lines are concealed which makes it easy to feel that you've stepped back in time.

In Tsumago we stayed at a gorgeous minshuku where we were served amazingly fresh food for breakfast and dinner.

Outside our minshuku

Watching the world go by on the internal deck of our minshuku
We were given robes and jackets that we were told we had to put on for dinner! 'Unfortunately' for the kids they didn't have any in kids sizes!.  Dinner was a gastronomic degustation menu featuring local produce from the Kiso valley.

Beef from cows that had been hand fed apples and massaged with beer!

After dinner we rugged up (as we it was -5 degrees outside) by putting on just above every item of clothing we had in our bags to listen to some locals rehearse some traditional music and play.

The main street of Tsumago...so eerily quiet
