Korcula Island

We left Dubrovnik a little sad as we thought we were leaving a beautiful paradise but it turned out that our next destination, Korcula Island was just as pretty.  The road from Dubrovnik to Orebic (where you catch the car ferry to get to Korcula) is a pretty spectacular coastal road.

Korcula Island is an island on the Dalmatian coast and is reached by a 20 minute ferry ride.  The kids were very excited to go on a car ferry and within no time we were on Korcula.

We had an apartment just outside the old town and once again we had amazing views of the harbour and marina from our bedroom windows.

Best apple strudel ever, made by our lovely Air BnB host Dubravka
We could not get over the blueness and clarity of the water.

So clear you could see the fish clearly
Abbey wanted to dive right in!

Korcula has an old town that is pretty and like Dubrovnik has the shiny marble paving. The old town is very small and it did not take us long to wander through it.

There was also a very pretty marina there where Brett spent a lot of his time! He met a guy from Melbourne who keeps his yacht in Korcula and he comes every European summer to sail it because the laws says that he has to take it out of Croatia every 18 months.  Hmmm....says Brett

We found the food on Korcula really fresh and not so dumbed down for the tourist so we spent a lot of our time eating out !  There were also lots of places to have a wine, coffee or gelati and just watch the world go by!

The best food we've had in Croatia was in a tiny village called Putnap
Abbey was excited about Grandma's meatballs with homemade pasta
Yum.....goat stew with peas
Girls loved this soup ... veg soup with bacon at Konoba Maha

Meat lovers paradise at Maha
Ice creams and swing for the kids, yachts to watch for Brett and glass of wine for Jess
We did eat out quite a bit but we also cooked at home as there was a fantastic fish market that was open early in the morning as well as a small fruit and vegetable open air market where the locals bring whatever is in their home garden to sell !

As we are not yet in the height of summer there are not many tourists around and the island feels like a very sleepy fishing village.

Hanging out in doorways on Korcula Island
We drove around the island and discovered some cute little villages and swimming bays.   There was Lombarda beach where the girls had to get around to the fact that the beach was a stone beach.  But they made the most of it and built a chateaus and even Mont St Michel out of the rocks.

Tiny little Brna was tiny, there was not quite a beach but we did find a nice little restaurant to have lunch at.

We also visited Racisce, which was also another very sleepy but pretty town
