Lucca

Our next stop in Italy was Lucca.   We had chosen to stay in Lucca so that we could visit the nearby Leaning Tower of Pisa.  But it turns out that Lucca is a destination itself and is often overlooked for Florence and bypassed on the way to Pisa.

There was much to see just walking around the car free medieval city

Having a rest with the locals

Lucca is a bike riding town and there were bikes everywhere, so we got in on the act too !

Lucca has got lots and lots of squares, there seemed to be one every few metres.

There were lots of piazzas in Lucca
The most unusual  'square' would have to be the Piazza dell Antiteatro which is not a square at all but more an oval shape

On our travels we found what the girls have declared the best gelato shop because it had swings to sit on and you got to make your own gelato!

Lucca is famous for its intact Renaissance era city walls which is a popular running, biking and walking track.

In addition to just wandering the streets of Lucca and its walls there are also many other attractions like the Guinigi Towers which had views right across Lucca

We also spent a delightful couple of hours at the Palazzo Pfanner and its gardens with a picnic on the lawns of the beautifully manicured gardens.
